Beer Company Cuts Ties W/ Viral Football Fan Over Offensive Old Tweets

Anheuser-Busch says it wants nothing to do with Carson King after some of his old, racist tweets came to light.
King is the Iowa State fan who raised more than $1 million for a children’s hospital.
It all started with a homemade sign he held during a college football broadcast, asking people to Venmo him money for beer.
Video of his sign went viral and money started rolling in.
King vowed to donate the money and Anheuser-Busch promised to match his donation; the company even made commemorative beer cans with King’s face on them.

But a newspaper reporter for the Des Moines Register discovered offensive tweets King wrote in 2012, when he was 16-years-old.
King now says he hopes his old tweets don’t distract from the good he’s doing now.
“I am embarrassed and stunned to reflect on what I thought was funny when I was a 16-year-old kid and I want to sincerely apologize,” King said.
“I don’t want what I did what I did when I was 16 to take away from the fact that we’re over $1.14 million for the children’s hospital.”

Though Anheuser-Busch is cutting ties with Carson King, the company still plans to honor its donation.

In another twist, the reporter with the Des Moines Register, who first discovered Carson King’s tweets, posted some offensive tweets of his own back in 2010 and 2013.
The reporter was in college at the time.
The newspaper says it is aware of the tweets and is investigating.
