Man Charged With Murder After Missing 59-Year-Old Woman Found Dead In Lincoln County

Detectives with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office say they have recovered the body of a missing Lincoln County woman.

Mary Cook, 59, of Lincolnton, was reportedly shot by Steve Avery, according to a news release.  Cook’s body was reported tossed off a bridge on Boy Scout Road after the shooting.

Detectives executed a search warrant at Avery’s home and reportedly found blood stains.  Avery then confessed to shooting Cook with a .22 caliber rifle and then dumping her body, according to a news release.

Avery has been charged with first degree murder and is being held in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center without bond.

Cook was reported missing on January 25th by her family.  Read below for more details.

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office need your assistance locating a missing woman.

Investigators say 59-year-old Mary Cook has not been seen by her family since Monday, September 23rd.  Her vehicle was located on September 25th at Johnny’s Mexican Restaurant on West Highway 150 and security footage obtained by deputies shows Cook getting out of her vehicle and walking towards West Highway 150 on September 25th.
