Raccoon Tests Positive For Rabies In Gaston County

GASTONIA, NC — Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement say a raccoon killed by a family cat on Sunday has tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was killed around 7:45pm outside a home on Sugar Lane. Officials say the raccoon got into a fight with the family’s cat and was killed during the encounter.

The animal was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh where it tested positive for rabies.

Officials say the family’s cat was vaccinated but ran off after suffering serious injuries during the fight. The cat is described as being orange and white, weighing 13 pounds.

This is Gaston County’s 12th confirmed case of rabies for 2019.
