Wage Garnishment will be used to Collect Unpaid MEDIC Ambulance Bills
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – MEDIC is cracking down on people who don’t pay their ambulance bills. The tax collector can now pull the money owed… from patients’ paychecks.
MEDIC says about 30 percent of patients don’t pay their ambulance bill. MEDIC’s director told commissioners on Tuesday night that it’s owed more than $123 million over the past seven years.
The method to collect – wage garnishment – is controversial.
Critics worry the change could cause people to be afraid to call 911 or force them to turn to Uber to get to the hospital.
MEDIC says other options would have been raising rates or trying to get an increase in county funding.
