The CMPD has charged 55-year-old John Copeland with the October 24th shooting death of 29-year-old Mario Witherspoon.
During the course of the investigation, detectives identified Copeland as a suspect and issued warrants for his arrest. On November 11th, 2019, Copeland was located and arrested in Newark, New Jersey, and his return to North Carolina is pending extradition.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police are still investigating the death of a man found shot in a north Charlotte backyard late Thursday night.
Mario Witherspoon, 29, was reportedly found with a gunshot wound in the backyard of a Rush Wind Drive home around 11:19pm. Police say he was pronounced dead on scene.
CMPD is still investigating the circumstances leading up to Witherspoon’s death.
So far, no arrests have been made in this case.
