Organizers Say Plans for 2020 RNC in Charlotte are Ahead of Schedule

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In less than 10 months, Charlotte hosts the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Organizers say they’re ahead of schedule.

Inside the Spectrum Center on Tuesday, convention organizers gave media a first look at what to expect in August 2020.

“It’s such a big, nice, modern place,” says convention President and CEO Marcia Lee Kelly.

Kelly says she’s focused on creating what she calls a “five-star experience” for those attending.

“To me, it’s about safety, it’s at the same time, just really showing off Charlotte,” she explains.

She says they’re using innovative ideas to layout the arena.

Yellow tape shows where the convention floor will be, 10 feet higher than the current floor, leaving space underneath for offices and storage.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into kind of rebuilding this space so that it works for a four-day television show,” says John Lassiter, President and CEO of the Host Committee.

Lassiter says work is getting done ahead of schedule and the fundraising is on track
