Investigation Underway After Handgun Found Near Union County Elementary School

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities are investigating after a handgun was found near a Union County Elementary School.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office,  a kindergarten class at Poplin Elementary School was on a nature walk with their teacher when students saw the gun in a wooded area.

The students told their teacher, who then made school administration aware of the handgun.  The school resource officer responded to the area and recovered the gun.

Officials say no students or staff handled the firearm and no one was injured in the incident.  Detectives are investigating the source of the gun and whether or not it is related to a recent crime at a residence near the school.
