Local Stores Prepare for Small Business Saturday

CHARLOTTE, NC — Once the big box deals have run their course, people are encouraged to shop local and support Small Business Saturday.

American Express began the shopping holiday in 2010. Small Business Saturday sales hit a record of 17.8 billion in 2018, according to American Express. About 3 billion of that was spent online.

Casee Jo Gill, the manager of regional business Savory Spice, says Small Business Saturday is huge for their bottom line.

“You’re getting to know your people that are owning these small businesses,” says Gill. “And the relationships that you’re building with them keeps you coming back, and it keeps us wanting you to come back.”

According to a recent survey by American Express, fewer people say they plan to shop small on Saturday. Thirty-nine percent say they’ll buy from a small business this year. That’s down from 44 percent last year.
