GASTONIA, N.C. — — For the fourth year in a row, a local couple – who wish to remain anonymous – have made a significant donation to sponsor Christmas for Gaston County families struggling to make ends meet. Gaston County’s Department of Health & Human Services will use the $50,000 donation to buy books, toys, clothing, and food for hundreds of children served by the agency.
In 2016, the couple showed up at an area Walmart and spent $30,000 to purchase a truckload of toys to be given out to local children. In 2017, the couple increased their gift to $50,000 so DHHS staff could purchase needed items like clothing and food in addition to the other gifts.
They matched this generous contribution in 2018 and now again in 2019. The couple, while not looking for recognition, does hope to inspire others to give back this holiday season.
Since the first year of this generous donation, many other individuals and organizations have come on board to help provide Christmas to these local families. Over the next two weeks, DHHS staff will be picking up toys, food, and clothing with the help of many local agencies including the Gaston County Police Department, Libby Lou’s Gifts, Ride-A-Bike, the Junior League of Gaston County, Food Lion of S. New Hope Rd. and Ingles of Dallas.
Additionally this year, the department is looking for auto shops or other businesses that are able to help families with car or home repairs as part of their Christmas gift.
