Daylight Saving Time All Year? SC Wants, Congress Must Agree

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) โ€” South Carolina lawmakers want the stateโ€™s residents to stop turning their clocks forward and backward each year.

But it will take a law from Congress to do it.

The South Carolina House gave final approval Wednesday to a bill saying the state will make daylight saving time year round if the federal government allows it.

The bill is heading to Gov. Henry McMasterโ€™s desk and his office said he will sign it.

Senate President Harvey Peeler sponsored the bill once called the โ€œSunshine Protection Act.โ€ The dairy farmer from Gaffney said it wonโ€™t just help farmers, but will help tourism too. He said he has heard broad support from across the state.

Opponents said year round Daylight Saving Time would have schoolchildren waiting for the bus in the dark in winter as the sun rises after 8 a.m. They also said the state could end up out of sync with their Eastern Standard Time neighbors.

About two dozen other states have passed or are considering similar requests. Congress hasnโ€™t acted, but President Donald Trump backs the idea too.

Last March, as clocks were turned forward, Trump tweeted โ€œMaking Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me!โ€
