CMPD: Ballantyne Carjacking Suspect Shot By Neighbor

According to the CMPD, the 17-year-old suspect who was shot after trying to carjack a woman in Ballantyne was involved in a series of robberies with another teenager prior to being shot.

The CMPD says at about 4:35 a.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting on Otter Creek Drive and were told that a man confronted two suspects who were breaking into his wife’s car.  The homeowner told police that the suspects pulled out a gun before driving off in a white Toyota Camry, but then drove back by the house and fired multiple shots at him while he was sitting in the car.  The man was uninjured but the car was hit by the gunshots.

About 15 minutes later, CMPD officers responded to a reported armed robbery on Clems Branch Drive.  Detectives say a white Toyota Camry pulled behind the victim’s car before a suspect got out of the car, put on a mask, and pointed a gun at the victim.  The victim had a gun and shot at the suspect, who fled the scene, according to police.

At 4:56 a.m., CMPD officers located a white Toyota Camry matching the description of the suspect vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop.  Police say the driver did not stop and a officers pursued the Toyota Camry until the driver hit a tree on Bevington Place.  Officers identified the driver as a teenaged, convicted felon, who was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  The vehicle the teen was driving was reported stolen on January 29th, 2020.

Just after 6:30 a.m., while police say they were working to identify the second suspect when officers responded to reports of a shooting on Myers Mill Lane in Ballantyne.

Detectives say a suspect approached a woman and took the keys to her car at gunpoint before here husband came out of the residence and confronted the suspect.

The husband and suspect engaged in an altercation and an armed neighbor came outside and demanded the suspect drop his weapon.  When the suspect refused, the neighbor reportedly shot him in the leg.

Police say neighbors held the suspect down until officers arrived.  The 17-year-old was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Both suspects will be charged after they are released from the hospital and detectives complete their preliminary investigation.

According to reports, the shooting happened just before 7 a.m. on Myers Mill Lane near Willoughby Run Drive.
