High School Student Facing A Criminal Charge After Bringing Weapon On Campus

MATTHEWS, N.C.– A student at Butler High School is facing a criminal charge after bringing a weapon on campus Thursday.

The Matthews Police Department received an anonymous tip around 10:30 a.m. that identified a particular student at the school that was said to be in possession of a weapon.

The school’s School Resource Officer (SRO) was made aware of the information and quickly located the suspected student.

According to a news release, when the SRO spoke to the student, they ran out of the building towards Matthews Mint Hill Road. After a brief foot pursuit, the student was taken into custody near the campus.

After an investigation, it was discovered that a 17-year-old male student was in possession of a pistol style BB gun. He was also evaluated and treated on-scene by MEDIC after injuring himself during his attempt to flee the officer.

The student will be facing a criminal charge for Weapons on Campus or Other Educational Property that will be filed with the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Court.
