Three Construction Workers Killed In Crash On I-40 In Iredell County

STATESVILLE, N.C. — The driver in the fatal crash that killed three construction workers on I-40 in Iredell County has been identified and charged.

The NC State Highway Patrol responded to the accident that happened around 3:30 a.m. near the 157 mile-marker on I-40 West. After a preliminary investigation it was revealed that a 2019 Freightliner box truck struck a stationary construction vehicle, Master Trooper Jeffrey Swagger said.

Logan Casey, 27, was operating the vehicle and failed to reduce speed which resulted in the collision, officials say.

As a result, the construction vehicle was propelled forward and struck three members of the repair crew which resulted in their death.

In the investigation it was revealed that the construction vehicle was equipped with an arrow board and flashing lights, of which both were activated at the time of the collision, a news release said.

Casey also had minor injuries as a result of the crash. According to officials, he is being charged with three counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle.
It was also determined that alcohol was not a factor into the incident.

According to a release, the deceased has been identified as Noah Logan Hamilton, 22, Austin Melton, 21, and Dustin Gelinas, 20. All three individuals are from Georgia and were working for a contracted guardrail repair crew named DBI Services.
