Original Story:
MONROE, N.C. — Union County Public Works is under a water boil advisory but the City of Monroe water customers have ensured that their city water is safe to drink.
The Union County Public Works Department announced that the water supply had tested positive for e-coli.
The presence of e-coli indicate contamination of fecal material, and the standard response required by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is to issue a boil water advisory as a precaution until the issue can be resolved.
According to officials, Monroe maintains and operates a separate water supply system from Union County.
Monroe generally receives all of its drinking water from three city lakes, Lakes Twitty, Lee, and Monroe.
Though the city has the ability to receive water from the county system, they have not in recent weeks.
For information about the Union County Advisory, please check the Union County Web Site. City customers are assured the City of Monroe water is safe to drink, but they can call (704) 282-4601 if they have any questions regarding city water supply.
