Gaston County Confederate Statue To Remain At Courthouse For Now

GASTONIA, N.C. — After three months of protests, and a commission’s vote to remove it, the future of a confederate monument remains in limbo.

According to the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, the group Sons of Confederate Veterans requested to take the monument from the county following months of protests on both sides of the issue.  But, on Friday the group had a change of heart, expressing concern over the legality of removing it.

Tuesday, the board voted to rescind the resolution allowing the statue to be removed and gifted to the Sons of Confederate Veterans.  Many Residents weren’t happy about it.

“You guys are really showing that you’re really schizophrenic, Doctor Jekyll Mr. Hyde, and people are gonna remember that,” said one resident.

“This monument was put up in 1912 it’s been here at the courthouse since the 1990s and it’s just now oppressing people?” said Angie Graham from Cherryville.

Commissioners say other groups have expressed interest in the monument and the issue isn’t a done deal yet.
