Everything You Need To Know About Who Is Performing At The 2020 VMAs

The VMAs will air live on WCCB, Charlotte's CW on Sunday, August 30th at 8 p.m.

The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will be bringing some of this year’s most notable artists together to perform live in a way that has never been seen before, setting a new tone for award shows.

This year, many award shows had to make a tough decision on how to bring entertainment into the homes of many due to the pandemic and MTV was no different. The VMAs will be reaching across NYC, featuring performances from various iconic locations throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island, to honor the spirit and resilience of New York.

The show will feature some outdoor performances that will range from having no audience to a limited one. But, this will not stop – halt – or slowdown the VMAs from reaching everyone who wants to see their favorite artists. MTV has partnered with The CW for the 2020 award show and NOW the live event will be hosted by both networks on Sunday, August 30th starting at 8 p.m.

But who is performing? Well, look no further – let me introduce the lineup that will captivate ears Sunday night.

Charlotte-native DaBaby has BOPped his way to the top of airways, headlines and now the VMAs. Since the beginning of his mainstream success, the rapper has not shied away from tough conversations and music that can stop listeners in their tracks.

This year, DaBaby received his first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with Rockstar featuring Roddy Ricch. The song also has a remix that features an extra verse which talks about the George Floyd protests and his own experience with police abuse.

DaBaby has been nominated for Artist of the Year at this year’s awards. In addition, Rockstar featuring Roddy Rich has been nominated for Song of Summer, Bop has been nominated for Best Hip-Hop as well as Best Choreography and DaBaby’s feature on Camila Cabello’s My Oh My is up for Best Cinematography.

What might be the most anticipated portion of the award show, whether you know it yet or not, is BTS’ first performance of Dynamite, the group’s first completely English single. You are reading that correctly, the seven-man Korean group has recently debuted a song that is completely sung in ENGLISH.

The fact that the song is sung in English by the global superstars is not the highlight – but the song itself which provides all the feelings of unfiltered joy and positive energy. For a little over three minutes 2020 stops and listeners are engulfed in a song that makes you want to get up and dance with lyrics like, “Shining through the city with a little funk and soul” and “Day or night, the sky’s alight, so we dance to the break of dawn.”

In the music video, through imagery and dance moves BTS tips their hats to many musical legends such as The Beatles, David Bowie and Michael Jackson. The VMA audience can look forward to more of those vibes and upbeat moves.

FUN FACT: The music video for Dynamite broke the record for the biggest 24-hour debut of all-time on YouTube with 101.1 million views.

BTS has been busy this year – prior to releasing retro-track Dynamite the group also released their fourth studio album, Map of the Soul:7 in January which features their lead single On. The song has been nominated for Best Pop, Best K-Pop and Best Choreography. The group has also been nominated for Best Group.

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande – two powerful forces together – I could just leave it there but I won’t. The duo quenched listeners ears with Rain On Me in May and lovers of the song have been hydrated ever since. The song which laps over genre-types could satisfy the souls of those who listen to pop, dance, house and disco music.

In the music video, both singers can be seen electrically performing in the rain and a wet and wild performance is what can be expected from the ladies as they take the stage with their number one hit.

Both Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande lead the nominations for this year’s  award show with nine each. Rain on Me by the duo is nominated for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Choreography, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Grande is also nominated for Best Collaboration and Best Music Video From Home with Stuck with U which she performs with Justin Bieber. Gaga is up for Artist of the Year and her performance of “Smile” from One World: Together At Home is nominated for Best Quarantine Performance.

CNCO will be bringing their Latin pop to the streets of New York for the VMAs with their smooth voices. The group, which was formed on the first season of the singing competition show La Banda, comes from all over the world but the combination of their voices were destined to meet.

CNCO’s voices are not the only smooth thing about their velvety song Honey Boo which was released in April. The beat alone can lower-blood pressure while exciting your feet as they get you ready to dance.

Matter of fact, the five-person group can be seen dancing (and flipping) in the streets all throughout their music video for the song. Is this what we can expect for their Sunday night performance? I sure hope so.

CNCO is nominated for Best Group and Best Quarantine Performance for their MTV Unplugged At Home appearance. Their song Honey Boo with Natti Natasha is nominated for Best Choreography.

Doja Cat

Doja Cat has MOOOved her way onto playlists, viral videos and hearts with her creative style of snarky raps and sensual vocals. Ms. Cat went viral in 2018 after making a song along with a music video all about the word ‘Moo.’ The song started as a joke but no one is laughing now.

Soon after the singer/rapper went viral she continued to hammer listeners with catchy song after even catchier song. One of Doja’s most known songs of 2020 is Say So which gained popularity after a dance was created on TikTok that went viral.

The song goes from disco to pop to rap and back to disco-groove with the music video idolizing those themes. The video also features the creator of the viral TikTok dance that helped to boost the song Haley Sharpe.

Doja Cat is nominated for Push Best New Artist and her song Say So is nominated for Song of Summer, Song of the Year and Best Direction.

And Many More…

The award show will also feature performances from The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, who will debut her performance of Midnight Sky, and Maluma.

The Weeknd is nominated for Artist of the Year and his song Blinding Lights is up for Song of Summer, Video of the Year, Best R&B, Best Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.

Miley Cyrus’s song Midnight Sky is up for Song of Summer while Mother’s Daughter is up for Best Art Direction and Best Editing.

Maluma is nominated for Best Latin for his song Que Pena featuring J Balvin.

Pre-Show Performers

When the VMAs packs their lineup – they truly pack it with talent. These “might be pre-show performers” are no appetizers to the real meal. They are a meal.

Chloe x Halle

The sister-duo will be performing and if you don’t know them yet, do me a favor and jot down their name because you will want to. Chloe x Halle are a vocal masterpiece whose voices can take you on the ride of your life.

The duo has also become wildly popular during the pandemic for their extremely different and high-quality quarantine performances that many can’t believe were all done from home.

Chloe x Halle is nominated for Best Group, their song Do It is nominated for Best R&B, and their performance of “Do It‘ from MTV Prom-Athon is up for Best Quarantine Performance.

Machine Gun Kelly

Machine Gun Kelly, who is the only performer who is nominated in the Best Alternative category, is expected to perform his punk pop hit Bloody Valentine at the show.

The rapper, guitarist and singer has also taken the popular song down a-notch melodically and released an acoustic version.

Machine Gun Kelly’s song Bloody Valentine is nominated for Best Alternative at the 2020 award show.

In addition, Lewis Capaldi is nominated for Push Best New Artist along with Tate McRae will be performing at the pre-show. Jack Harlow will also be performing. Harlow’s song Whats Poppin is nominated for Song of Summer.
