CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The massively popular video app TikTok and messaging app WeChat will be banned from US app stores starting Sunday. It’s all because of the Trump Administration’s executive orders against the two apps, saying they’re a threat to national security.
But cyber security expert Theresa Payton says the whole ordeal has left multiple organizations in a compromising and confusing position. Payton says, “You have the administration writing an executive order, and then CFIUS (Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States) saying ‘I don’t like the deal.’ And suddenly you’re left with private sector companies scrambling trying to figure out how to be in compliance. There’s no legislation.”
The private sector companies are not the only ones who are confused. We took a poll on Twitter to see if you understand the ban as well. At last check, 36% of you say yes, 44% say no, 12% say “kind of,” and 8% don’t know what TikTok is.
