Police: 20-Year-Old Charged After Two Kids Shot While Playing With Rabbit On East Charlotte Apartment Balcony

Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives charged a 20-year-old man after two children, ages 5 and 11, were hit by gunfire while playing with a rabbit on an east Charlotte apartment balcony Monday.
On that day, officers responded to the intersection of West Sugar Creek Road and North Tryon Street around 7:30 p.m. in reference to a shooting into an occupied vehicle. When they arrived on the scene and spoke to the victim, police were informed that the unknown suspect’s car was described as a small red sedan.
After talking to the victim and gathering evidence, officers were able to locate the vehicle involved in the incident on Lasalle Street. As officers approached the vehicle, it left the immediate area at a high rate of speed, and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit ended on Barringer Drive and Pressley Road, where Jatarius Jones, 20, Dominique Daniels, 21, and Niyha Durham, 22, were detained, police say.
According to police, following an interview with CMPD the individuals were charged with the following:
- Daniels was charged with Discharge Weapon into Occupied Property, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, and Felony Conspiracy.
- Durham was charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun at Person and Felony Conspiracy.
- Jones was charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun at Person, Possession of Stolen Firearm, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, and Felony Conspiracy.
Through a continued investigation, CMPD identified Jones as the suspect on the Sharon Pointe Apartment shooting that injured two kids. Warrants were obtained and Jones was charged for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, police say.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say an 11-year-old boy was shot and a five-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet at an east Charlotte apartment complex late Monday afternoon.
Officers responded around 5:45 p.m. to Sharon Pointe Apartments, on Amity Pointe Road, in response to a shooting.
When police arrived at the complex, they located the 11-year-old child who had been shot. He was transported by Medic to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A short time later, officers learned that the five-year-old victim had been grazed by a bullet. Police say he was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
