Why do Leaves Change Color?

Chlorophyll is what gives a leaf its green color. Once the chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears leaving the yellow and orange colors to become visible. Chlorophyll breaks down for several reasons including cooler weather, light, and water supply. Bright colors are more likely when late summer is dry, and when autumn has sunny days and cool nights.
