Cabarrus Co. School Board Votes to Censure Member Over Derogatory Word
CONCORD, N.C. – The Cabarrus Co. Board of Education voted to censure one of its members on Monday night.
Laura Blackwell got caught on an open mic using a derogatory word during last week’s meeting.
Teachers and parents demanded action after those comments.
The unanimous vote to censure Blackwell came during a special board meeting.
Blackwell didn’t attend the debate over the censure, saying she had internet problems. She later joined by phone.
“I let my emotions get the better of me. The past week has been one of contemplation and reflection for me,” Blackwell said in a statement before the vote.
She previously apologized for using the offensive term that refers to people with intellectual differences.
Dozens of parents, teachers, and students rallied outside the district office just hours before the special meeting.
