Community Honors Life Of Charlotte Business Legend
CHARLOTTE – The community is honoring the life of a Charlotte business legend. Arthur Eugene Grier, Jr., died last week at the age of 77.
The family’s success story dates back to the 1920’s in Charlotte when Grier’s father and grandfather opened two businesses off Monroe Road, one was a Texaco gas station, the other, Grier’s grocery store, which is now the site of Lupie’s Cafe’. The family also developed their own neighborhood, Grier Heights.
“He wanted to develop a neighborhood for Blacks to be able to own their own homes back in the early 1920’s,” says Allen Grier, A.E.’s son.
“It gives a great sense of pride that all the stuff that they went through to establish that community and today that legacy still continues,” says Artie Grier, A.E.’s Son.
A.E. Grier and Sons Funeral Home has served the Charlotte community for 90 years. A celebration of life begins Wednesday for Grier. A small parade will take place from the funeral home to the Grier Heights neighborhood.
Grier will be laid to rest Friday.
