A Violent Carjacking Caught On Camera In South End

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Surveillance video shows a silver Audi following a Mercedes into the parking garage of Mosaic South End Apartments on South College Street just before 9pm on August 8th. You see both cars park. A suspect leaves the silver Audi and walks up to the victim sitting in the Mercedes. The suspect pulls out a gun, points it at the victim’s face, demanding that he gets out of the car. The victim gets out and the suspect drives the Mercedes away. Another suspect follows him in the Audi.

“It’s pretty shocking. I didn’t hear anything about it. I didn’t have any kind of notification. It’s pretty surprising,” says a Mosaic South End resident.

CMPD Crime Stoppers Coordinator Adrian Johnson says in the Mercedes: a wallet, a cell phone and another item that has Johnson concerned.

“The suspect did steal a firearm that was inside the victim’s vehicle, which was later recovered, but that firearm was not,” says Johnson.

A CMPD spokesperson tells WCCB 470 guns were stolen from car break-ins as of September 2nd. With no witnesses or leads, Johnson says police have reason to believe the gun could be used in other crimes.

“We want to catch the suspect before he actually harms somebody, or if not kill them, and we want to get him off the street.”

Johnson says although these types of crimes are rare for the area, people need to be aware of their surroundings. Especially if a location is not well lit.

“A lot of times we think crime can’t happen in certain areas, this is a nice area, crime happens it happens everywhere.”
