CMPD: Officers Investigate A Fatal Collision In A Crosswalk

CHARLOTTE. N.C. — Investigators say the driver of a 2011 Toyota Corolla hit and killed a man in the crosswalk on Saturday, October 17th.

The pedestrian, 28-year-old Jamal McCullough, stepped off the sidewalk into the crosswalk on Beatties Ford Road and died at the scene after getting hit by the Toyota around 9:30 p.m.

Driver of the Toyota, 24-year-old Shawn-Dale Ashley, was heading south on Beatties Ford Road, in the right lane, when he hit McCullough just south of Hildebrand Street, according to a news release.

Police say the crosswalk was not in an intersection, and McCullough did not activate the crossing light when walking across the street.

Investigators say impairment is suspected for McCullough, but Ashley was not speeding or impaired at the time of the crash.

Police say the investigation remains active, but no charges are pending against Ashley.

Anyone who saw the crash and has more information is asked to call Detective Mercedes  at 704-432-2169, extension 5, or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
