Some CMS Students Return To In-Person Learning

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Josiah and Bishop Fowler walked home from their first day of in-person learning this school year at Elizabeth Traditional Elementary.

“I felt good being back in the classroom with my friends,” says Josiah Fowler.

The father of the second and fourth graders says it’s good to get them out of the house.

“We are prepared for it, the first day of school. They told us what we need to bring and what the students need to have,” says Carolos Fowler.

Students are required to wear a face mask and have their temperatures checked before going into the building. Desks were six feet apart, yellow markers in the hallway to show how far students need to be from others. Recess has games for social distancing. Playgrounds are closed.

Under “Plan B,” students will rotate between in-person and virtual learning.

“Our teachers have prepared, along with our principles, to make sure that everyone is staying safe and to make sure that teaching and learning is taking place from the very first moment,” says CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston.

Darina Cooper is a second grade teacher at Walter G. Byers Elementary School. She says she had to remind students to stay physically distanced.

“Some of the kids had trouble keeping their masks on. That’s to be anticipated, especially if that second grade level. We did have to give some reminders,” says Cooper.
