PORTLAND, O.R. — Voters in Oregon made history by becoming the first state to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of street drugs like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. Five additional states legalized marijuana (Arizona, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, and South Dakota).
What this means:
People who are arrested with small amounts of hard drugs will avoid going trial and could possibly avoid jail time. Instead, they will have to pay a $100 fine and attend an addiction recovery program.
The state will fund the treatment centers by the revenues made off legalized marijuana.
