Poplin Elementary School Staff Member Dies After Long Battle with COVID-19

UNION CO., N.C. –  Students and staff at an elementary school in Union County are remembering a staff member who died from COVID-19.

Family says Melissa Bowman died on Saturday after battling the virus since August.

The district tells WCCB Charlotte she worked at Poplin Elementary School as a data manager.

Students say she also worked as a crossing guard before and after school.

“She was just really nice, and she was really good at her job as a crossing guard,” says student Jameson Christi.

There is a growing memorial for Bowman outside the school.

People are bringing signs and balloons to celebrate her life.

“She really cared for the faculty of Poplin Elementary. she cared for the parents and children, and it’s going to be really tough to fill in those shoes,” says parent Ron Cummings.

Union County Public Schools released this statement:

“Union County Public Schools extends its sincerest condolences to the Bowman family. Mrs. Melissa Bowman worked in UCPS for 20 years and was a data manager at Poplin Elementary for 11 years. She will truly be missed by her school family. Counselors will be available on Monday and throughout the week for students and staff who need support during this difficult time.”
