Charlie Brown Specials To Air On TV, After All, In PBS Deal

The Latest (11/18/20):

The “Great Pumpkin” never showed on broadcast television this year, but after a deal with PBS, the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Christmas specials will return to the air.

Last month, Apple TV+ became the new home to the beloved Peanuts holiday specials. That sparked an outcry from viewers who were accustomed to annually tuning in on network TV. Apple offered each special to stream for free for a handful of days, but that didn’t stop online petitions from gathering hundreds of thousands of signatures.

On Wednesday, Apple bowed to the backlash, announcing it had teamed up with PBS for ad-free broadcasts of “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” (on Nov. 22) and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (on Dec. 13).

Both specials will also be available for free during three-day windows on Apple TV+ (Nov. 25-27 for “Thanksgiving” and Dec. 11-13 for “Christmas.”) For subscribers, the specials will be available beginning Nov. 18 and Dec. 4, respectively.

Original Story (10/21/20):

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlie Brown and its holiday specials will only be aired on Apple TV+, after Apple earned the streaming rights in a new partnership they announced on Monday, October 19th.

Charlie Brown premiered on CBS in 1996 and has been on ABC since 2001, and this is the first time the show is being taken off the air.

The Halloween classic, “It’s the great pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” that has been aired on TV for more than five decades, will only be available for Apple TV+ subscribers and free for non-subscribers on October 30th, 31st, and November 1st.

Apple TV officials say they partnered with WildBrain, Peanuts Worldwide, and Lee Mendelson Film Productions to secure the exclusive rights to stream the show.

Anyone wanting to watch any of the “Peanuts” shows will have to subscribe to Apple TV for $4.99 a month, although viewers will be able to enjoy the holiday specials for free on certain dates.

“A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” will be available for free on November 25th through November 27th, and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will be available for free on December 11th through December 13th.

Charlie Brown is part of a larger deal Apple TV+ made for all things “Peanuts,” and this includes new original series and specials, according to Apple.

Apple officials say for a limited time anyone who buys one of their products can get one year free of Apple TV+.
