Gaston County Listed On States’ COVID County Alert System

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — COVID-19 is affecting every county in North Carolina. But state health leaders say the virus is impacting some communities much harder including in Gaston County.

Health leaders are especially concerned about Gaston County because of the high impact number of cases could have on local hospitals.

Tuesday night, the Gaston County Public Health Department responded saying they’ve encouraged compliance with mask wearing and capacity restrictions for the safety of their residents.

Gaston County has more than 9,000 COVID-19 cases, 172 deaths and 55 people are currently in the hospital.

Public Health Director Steve Eaton talked to WCCB News two weeks ago about his concerns that the county’s COVID cases were moving in the wrong direction.

Eaton said, “The concern is moving into the winter months the holiday times where people may have been socially distanced outside now more people are going to be moving indoors and so with that we’re concerned for that for a couple of reasons one the impact it could have on the health care system we don’t want to overrun our hospitals”

State health leaders say people living these critical counties like Gaston should limit mixing between households, avoid places like outdoor bars and night clubs, consider ordering take out from restaurants or eating outdoors. All businesses are urged to implement teleworking.
