Edge On The Clock: Jeopardy Host Replacement, Facial Recognition For Bears & Oxford Word Of The Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jeopardy has announced its plan for moving forward without beloved host Alex Trebek. The show will feature a string of guest hosts starting with Ken Jennings.

He’s the fan who’s won the most consecutive games with 74. Jeopardy’s producers have not yet revealed who will follow Jennings or who will become Trebek’s permanent replacement.

Facial recognition software is no longer just for humans. Scientists have developed new technology called ‘Bear ID’ that will now be able to recognize bears.

It’s a more effective and safe way to keep track of bears in the wild. Typically researchers electronically tag the bears or attach a collar, which is more expensive and invasive. The scientists believe it will help keep communities safe as well.

The Oxford English Dictionary had a hard time picking its traditional ‘Word of the Year’ for 2020. So instead of just choosing one word of the year, it selected the most important words for certain months.

It was ‘bushfire’ for January when Australia suffered its worst fire season on record. ‘Acquittal’ for February when President Trump’s Impeachment trial ended and starting in March, terms related to the pandemic like COVID-19, lockdown, social distancing and reopening.
