The Latest (12/2/20):
The Charlotte Sports Foundation (CSF) announced that this year’s Duke’s Mayo Classic between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, which was set to take place on December 12, has been cancelled.
The game’s cancellation comes after being postponed twice. The game was originally scheduled to take place at the Bank of America Stadium but was moved to Wake Forest’s Truist Field. It was originally postponed from its scheduled date of September 26th due to COVID-19 testing results and procedures implemented by the University of Notre Dame.
The ACC announced the football schedule changes after a recommendation from the conference Athletic Director football subcommittee. The league’s Athletic Directors voted to preserve the integrity of the ACC Football Championship Game by evaluating each of the three teams in contention (Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame) based on a nine-game conference schedule. As a result, Clemson and Notre Dame will conclude the regular season this weekend.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation made the following statement about the cancellation of the game:
“While we are extremely disappointed to not play the 2020 Duke’s Mayo Classic, we completely understand the decision given the unprecedented situation,” said Danny Morrison, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “The challenges faced by the ACC and the schools this season have forced unforeseen cancellations. Unfortunately, the 2020 Duke’s Mayo Classic is one of those affected.”
“Duke’s Mayonnaise, Director of Athletics John Currie and his staff at Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Truist Field, Bank of America Stadium and ESPN have all been exceptionally accommodating partners as we have been forced to adapt to several curveballs due to the continuing pandemic. We now look forward to Charlotte hosting the ACC Football Championship and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to close out a challenging college football season and year.”
Original Story (9/2/20):
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Sports Foundation (CSF) announced Wednesday that this year’s Duke’s Mayo Classic will be played at Wake Forest University’s Truist Field in Winston-Salem instead of Bank of America Stadium.
The 2020 Duke’s Mayo Classic is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish taking on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In accordance with guidelines from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services concerning COVID-19, the game will not be open for fans to attend.
Fans would not have been able to attend the game in person either if it was still scheduled to take place in Charlotte.
“The decision has been made to play the 2020 Duke’s Mayo Classic at Wake Forest University with no fans in attendance,” said Danny Morrison, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “The Demon Deacons already host Clemson at home on Sept. 12 before traveling to NC State and then playing the Duke’s Mayo Classic against Notre Dame. As we continue to follow the guidelines and advice of government and public health officials, playing this game at Truist Field made the most sense. We look forward to an exciting game between two great teams in Notre Dame and Wake Forest.”
Fans who purchased tickets through the Charlotte Sports Foundation will have their tickets refunded to the original payment source. If fans would like their payments applied to the 2021 season or have any additional questions, they may contact CSF at tickets@charlottesports.org.
