Deputies: COVID-19 Outbreak At Mecklenburg County Jail Leads To A Rise In Cases

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Deputies with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office say the number of inmates testing positive for coronavirus are rising, after an outbreak before Thanksgiving where two residents on the 6th floor tested positive.

Deputies say there are 65 inmates with coronavirus and 255 inmates in either Respiratory Isolation or Respiratory Quarantine because of potential exposures.

Residents being held in either Respiratory Isolation or Respiratory Quarantine are being kept separate to reduce the spread of the virus to the 1,430 total residents in custody, officials say.

Officials say most of the inmates being quarantined aren’t showing symptoms, and only two of the 65 inmates with coronavirus are requiring infirmary care at this time.

Jail officials say their medical director remains in close contact with the local health department and Atrium Health, and they will provide more information as the situation develops.
