CHARLOTTE. N.C. (News Release)– Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control (AC&C) is on the cusp of a historical moment as it closes in on a 90% save rate for animals processed through the shelter, designating it as a “no-kill” community for the very first time. A
special campaign, “900 Countdown”, started in November, has encouraged adoptions of 900 animals in order to make the 90% goal. Currently, only 188 adoptions are needed to hit the mark!
“Achieving the 90% goal will position our shelter as the true safe haven that it is for our community’s homeless pets and for citizens who need assistance with keeping their pets,” said Dr. Josh Fisher, AC&C Director. “Charlotte recognizes the power of the human-animal bond and has come together this year to ensure we do all we can to save animals and keep people and pets together. It’s been remarkable.”
Fisher and his management team have strategically planned for this moment for years, moving the needle on animal save rates from 35% nine years ago, to 79% in 2019 and today at 89.7%. Shelter leaders have launched its own movement and hashtag, #CLT90, to build on the community spirit and culture of our city.
Everyone has a chance to make history with AC&C, says Fisher. “There are several ways we make it possible for people to become involved in this movement, through adoption and sustaining programs that support animal health, safety, and successful outcomes.”
Want to help?
1. Adopt a dog or cat. If you’re looking for a pet, consider one at AC&C. View their animals available for adoption. (But please don’t surprise someone with a pet as a gift. It’s a major commitment, and owners should be part of that decision.)
2. Give a shelter dog or cat a vacation. Borrow a dog or cat for a few nights. You’ll return your relaxed, furry friend with a report card that will educate prospective adopters about their personality and preferences.
3. Support Human Animal Support Services (HASS). Help families in need to keep the pets they love. Donate to the HASS Fund or buy supplies from its Amazon wish list.
4. Share this exciting news on social media! If you have friends who have been thinking of adding a pet to their lives, share this campaign with them.
