CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives say a pedestrian was hit and killed in east Charlotte Saturday night after a silver 2006 Honda Civic struck the pedestrian on East Independence Boulevard.
Police say the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.
Officers say they responded to the crash on January 9th around 12:30 a.m. to find the Honda damaged in the roadway, and say the driver, 39-year-old James Benton Jr., was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Detectives say the pedestrian, identified as 28-year-old Chris Elijah Jordan, was found unresponsive laying in the roadway and was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where they later died.
Investigators say Benton was driving west on East Independence Boulevard in the center lane when he hit the victim.
Police say Benton was neither impaired or speeding at the time of the crash, and it is unknown where Jordan was heading.
Detectives say Benton has not been charged in this case.
Police say the investigation is active and ask anyone with more information to call Detective Crum at 704-432-2169, extension #4, or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
