Hidden Gems of CLT: Dish
CHARLOTTE, NC –There’s a good chance your missing something hidden in your favorite neighborhood. WCCB Charlotte’s Alexandra Elich explores tucked away spots, historic businesses and secret gardens in the middle of the bustling city.
On this week’s Hidden Gems of Charlotte, Alex visits Dish.
At Dish, it’s all about the comforts of home from the look of the place to the food. With eats like braised pork, pot roast, fried steak, meatloaf and collards just to name a few.
“To most people it would fit into that southern genre. But I think it’s just a comfort food, ” says owner Louis Donald.
The big yellow building on Thomas Avenue has been around for 19 years. Donald bought if from the original owners in September 2019.
Donald says it was important to him to keep everything the same. Adding breakfast this year after Sammy’s Deli closed, Donald hired some of their staff to start serving up breakfast to keep the deli alive.
“What I love about Charlotte is the history in a little places. As a food guy, I much rather go to an off the beaten path place then go get dressed up and sit down for five courses,” says Donald.
Everything is made from scratch and you can’t beat the price point.
“A bowl of chicken and dumplings with a side and a biscuit, nine bucks. And it’s all handmade,” says Donald.
We saw it first hand back in the kitchen. Some cooks and staff working here for more than a decade. In the dining area you’ll see people from all walks of life.
“You see the dynamics of a business meeting here, a couple older ladies enjoying their salads here and then you get some kids from the neighborhood drinking beers at the bar. It’s very affordable, it’s friendly and you walk in and you feel like family you don’t feel like a customer. It’s not stuffy it’s very simple down to earth everybody’s welcome,” says Donald.
Donald says the restaurant has made a few tweaks like elevating the patio and changing some ingredients. The restaurant has also been featured on the popular show “Diners, Drive -Ins and Dives.”
