Spotlight on Black Women Owned Businesses in CLT: Pauline Tea-Bar Apothecary
In honor of the first black Batwoman, we shine the bat-signal on black women owned businesses in the Queen City
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A powerful black woman will soon take Gotham by storm. But in Charlotte, powerful black women have always been essential in shaping the city. To celebrate the premiere of the first black Batwoman played by Javicia Leslie premiering Sunday on Charlotte’s CW, we are shining the bat-signal on businesses run by black women in Charlotte.
A faint sweetness floats through the air and greets you as you step into Pauline Tea-Bar Apothecary’s sunlight-filled lounge. At a time where self-care is essential, owner Sherry Waters hopes to provide a space to decompress. While she may not offer wifi, she offers something else badly needed – time unplugged. “Many people have been coming in and using their hotspots,” says Waters, “and have found once they get here maybe what they need is a break.”
As a stewardship practitioner and community chaplain, Waters’ goal in creating her herbal tea lounge is to give people an opportunity to experience a restorative environment through her selection of herbal teas, aromatherapy and music.
Waters’ influence reaches beyond the ornate cups and plush chairs of her tea lounge to inspire a community of future black female business owners. She says, being a black woman in entrepreneurship in Charlotte today is important because of her daughters. “I want to inspire them to go after anything they desire and know that it is achievable. With perseverance and diligence it can be done.”
Suitably, if Waters could be any superhero, she picks Wonder Woman. “I would wear a W across my chest because I’m often in wonderment of just how blessed I am in being able to serve the community in this way.”
