Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 pm Wednesday until 12 pm Thursday for Ashe, Watauga and Avery counties.

Another area of low pressure increases rain and snow chances late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning. The areas certain to see accumulation will be the High Country. Those above 3,500′ could quickly pick up 4+” of snow. Those below 3,500′ could see 2-4”. The Foothills and northern Piedmont may see a trace – 1”.

TIMING: For the Mountains, rain quickly changed over to snow this evening. For the Foothills and Northern Piedmont, rain will dominate the late evening hours with a possible quick change over to snow after midnight – if snow falls, it will not amount to much. For most of the Piedmont, this is a mainly rain event – some snow flurries are possible very early Thursday morning.

WIND: On top of the precipitation, it will also be windy overnight into Thursday. The Piedmont could see gusts up to 25 mph with the High Country seeing gusts exceed 40 mph.

Sunshine, dry conditions, and cooler temperatures will return on Thursday and Friday with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s. Our next weather system will arrive on Sunday.
