Cold Rain and a Wintry Mix will Dominate Sunday
Winter Storm Watches issued for portions of the WCCB area.
Winter Storm Watches in effect Saturday night into Sunday for the Mountains, Foothills and portions of the northern Piedmont (Iredell, Alexander, Catawba, Caldwell, Burke, Ashe, Watauga, and Avery Counties.)
A strong system will push into the Mountains Saturday night and spread into the WCCB area through Sunday. With the moisture from this system plus cold temperatures, some are likely to see a wintry mix. The greatest area of concern will be north of I-40 as sleet/freezing rain looks to be the primary precipitation type.
Who will see what? As of Friday afternoon, this looks to be a mainly snow/some ice event for the Mountains. Mainly ice/some snow/some rain for the Foothills. And mainly rain/some ice for the northern Piedmont
How much? ** Too soon for specific totals.
– I will say freezing rain/ice risk is likely any location north of I-40. In this area slick travel and some trees coming down will not be out of the question.
– South of I-40, but north of Charlotte the freezing rain/ice risk is possible, not at guarantee.
– Around and south of Charlotte, this is mainly a cold rain event.
Stay weather aware through the day on Sunday and stay tuned as we finetune specifics.
