UPDATE: A Local Woman Donates Her Kidney To A Neighbor She Never Met
CHARLOTTE, NC.– Nivea Giffin has a second chance at life, because of a stranger.
Griffen posted on Facebook about her struggle with genetic kidney disease. Something only her family and close friends knew, but none were a match. Erin Godlewski lives in the same Fort Mill neighborhood as Griffin, the women go to the same gym, and their kids go to the same school. Β But they never met. Godlewski saw griffin’s plea on Facebook. She got tested and found out she was a match. The women went in for surgery at Wake Forest Baptist on January 25th.
“Such a feeling of, I was just peace. I knew what I was doing, I was at the right space at the right time. And I have not second-guessed it the entire time,” says Godlewski.
Godlewski says the day was a blur. They were in surgery for more than three hours.
“I think that’s the first thing I said to my husband when I woke up, I’m like it’s done? It’s over? She has it? He’s like, yeah it’s in her.”
Both surgeries–successful.
“When I left the hospital they didn’t want bloodwork. The kidneys working like a normal person. Like my numbers are normal,” says Griffin.
WCCB asked Griffin if this is the most incredible gift she has ever received?
“Yes. Definitely. no words. I can’t cry because it hurts.”
