Police: Gastonia Officer Shoots Armed Woman While Responding To Overdose Call

GASTONIA, N.C. –– Authorities are investigating after a Gastonia police officer shot a woman early Monday while responding to an overdose call, police say.

According a news release, the shooting happened just after 12 a.m. on Mountain Avenue in Gastonia. Officers responded to the overdose call and upon arrival found an armed woman inside the home. Police say the officer shot the woman.

Shae Estelle Jones, the 33-year-old identified woman, has been transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Officials say she is in critical but stable condition.

Officer K. Solano-Garita, the officer involved in the shooting, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure.

The Gastonia Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct a separate but parallel administrative investigation to determine whether department policies and procedures were followed. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will be assisting in the investigation.
