Accumulating Ice Knocking on the Door for Some

Winter Weather Alerts Issued Ahead of Thursdays Storm
Winter Storm Warnings in effect from Rowan county points west across the northern Piedmont, Foothills, and Mountains until 7 PM Thursday.
Winter Weather Advisory in effect from Stanly county westward through Cleveland county. This does include Mecklenburg county until 7 AM Friday.
WHEN: The worst will likely be from 3 am – 12 pm, but still dangerous travel conditions around and north of I-40 through the remainder of the day. The biggest concern is the Thursday morning commute.
WHAT: Freezing rain, sleet, and rain in the morning. Rain with a slight mix after 12 pm.
North of I-40: This will be the area hardest hit by ice. .25-.50”. If we see .50” of ice (which isolated neighborhoods could see especially closer to the Virginia border), this means numerous downed trees and power outages. Most areas along and north of I-40 will see coated windshields, cars, and trees., dangerous driving conditions on bridges, and some roads along with scattered power outages.
Problem index: Scattered (numerous the closer to Virginia you get)
Between I-40 & I-85: .15-.25” of ice. This will be an area of isolated impacts. The closer to I-40 you get, the greater risk for impact.
Problem index: Isolated.
For Charlotte and areas south: Glaze – 0.10” of ice. You may notice some sleet early in the morning, but for the most part, tomorrow will seem like a cold miserable rain with rain and freezing rain. People around the Charlotte area need to be careful driving and walking.
Problem index: Not much, but not safe to say zero.
