Winter Weather Alert: Icy Issues More Likely

AM Headlines
  • Freezing Start
  • Chilly Day
  • Rain/Freezing Rain Begins Overnight
  • Winter Storm Warnings in effect through Thursday PM
A lot to unpack with this forecast. after a beautiful day filled with sunshine, highs today will struggle to get into the upper 40s. Clouds will build back in ahead of our next big system.
Rain will begin overnight and as temperatures drop, it will likely turn to freezing rain for a good portion of the region north of I-85. Ice accumulations up to 1/2″ will be possible for the mountains in addition to 1-2″ of sleet/snow. For areas north of I-40 .2-.5″ of ice accumulation will be possible. With .1-.2″ of ice north of I-85. Charlotte will be on the border of this changeover with temperatures remaining in the 30s throughout the day Thursday. North Charlotte could see a glaze of ice making for hazardous driving conditions. Any ice accumulation will put weight on powerlines and trees and could easily cause power outages. Rain will keep things cold and damp through the day for areas not dealing with the ice with 3/4-1.5″ of rainfall possible. This system will clear out by midday Friday.
Weekend into Next Week
Temps will warm to the low 50s by Sunday. It will be a sunny and dry weekend. Early next week temps will continue to climb, but rain chances will also return. The good news is that temps will be too warm for dangerous wintry weather Monday. Rain will wrap quickly with highs reaching the low 60s by Tuesday of next week.
