LINCOLNTON, N.C. — North Carolina Troopers say two people died and one person suffered life-threatening injuries after two vehicles collided head-on in Lincoln County on Friday.
Troopers say they responded to the wreck around 1 p.m. on Campground Road near Pine Ridge Drive to find two men dead at the scene.
Detectives say the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche was heading west on Campground Road when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2002 GMC Yukon heading east.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 28-year-old Alexander Hickman, was taken by a medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries, and the passenger in the GMC, 74-year-old Michael Spillars, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to troopers.
Troopers say the driver of the GMC, 73-year-old Boyce Moore, also died at the scene.
Detectives say the initial investigation reveals the Chevrolet driver was driving recklessly and this contributed to the crash.
Police say traffic was detoured as the roadway was closed for over two hours after the collision.
