Officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) say they recently hired contractors to pick up litter on the primary roads in the county, but now the county is looking for volunteers to help resolve the trash problem.

Officials say volunteers will be provided cleanup supplies including reversible orange/blue trash bags, gloves, and orange safety vests from their local NCDOT County Maintenance Yard office.

Anyone looking to volunteer in Alexander County can get supplies by calling Jackie Burgess at 828-632-2164.

NCDOT officials say maintenance crews will devote one week of their time to pick up litter and collect the orange bags placed on the roadsides by volunteers.
