Fears of Summer Gas Shortage Due to Fewer Tanker Truck Drivers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Analysts are raising fears about a possible gas shortage this summer.

It’s because companies are having a hard time finding tanker truck drivers.

Demand is still high for students learning to drive the big rigs at TransTech driving school in Charlotte.

Director of operations Eric Wright says many truckers have recently left the business.

“Really, I think with the pandemic, if they were two or three years from retirement, now they kind of used the pandemic as a means to say, ‘You know what? I’m going to try something different,'” Wright says.

According to the National Tank Truck Carriers organization, up to 25 percent of tank trucks in the fleet are parked nationwide heading into the summer.
