Sleepy Poet Antique Mall Buys New Permanent Home

Charlotte's iconic antique mall purchases a new, larger spot on South Boulevard

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (News Release) — Sleepy Poet has spent more than two decades on South Boulevard and they love calling it home. Owner, Dickson Shreffler, opened his first antique mall in Charlotte in 1998 and expanded in 2008 to the current location. They have been leasing the current location at 4450 South Boulevard for over 13 years. Sleepy Poet has been experiencing tremendous growth and it is time for the store to find a permanent home.

On April 30th, 2021 Sleepy Poet closed on a permanent location at 6424 South Boulevard, just down the road from the current location. The new location is located on 6 acres, which will provide ample room for parking, which has been a common problem at the current location. This amount of space will also provide room for events, food trucks, live music, and more in the future. Sleepy Poet is already a destination for many, but this new location will provide even more opportunities to change the way antiquing is done in the area.

The property is located along the LYNX Light Rail between two passenger stations, less than a 10-minute walk from the stations. It includes a 48,000 square foot Industrial Building consisting of 44,000 square feet of warehouse space and 4,000 square feet of office space which will all be renovated and utilized for the store.

The building was originally built in 1964 and most recently was occupied by the Banner Service Corporation, a world-class supplier of metal materials since 2005. One of the main missions of Sleepy Poet is to reimagine, recycle, and reuse, which will be their goal with this building as well. The goal will be to re-use or re-purpose 70% of the building and materials when renovating it into the antique mall. Renovations on the property will start immediately with a move-in date to be announced later in 2021. There will be more details shared as soon as plans have solidified in the future.

Sleepy Poet has been voted “Best Antiques in Charlotte” each year since 2011 by Charlotte Magazine. With hundreds of vendors, thousands of customers, and countless antiques, collectibles, and vintage items, the only thing missing for Sleepy Poet was a permanent home along South Boulevard. Sleepy Poet is very excited for the future and possibilities in this new home.
