CMPD: Street Racer Wanted Following Serious Crash On North Tryon Street
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a street racer is wanted after a man was seriously injured in a crash that happened during an illegal street race on North Tryon Street in Charlotte.
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say they responded to a single-vehicle crash around 2am on May 16th on North Tryon Street near the I-85 Connector and found a 2009 Dodge Challenger in the road with significant damage.
The driver, Maurice Kelly, was reportedly transported to a local hospital with serious injuries in another vehicle, according to a news release.
Police say the initial investigation revealed Kelly was racing two other vehicles on North Tryon Street at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle.
Kelly’s vehicle went off the road and struck a construction fence, three trees, two metal light poles, and then rolled over, according to a news release from CMPD.
Police say Aaron Duncan was one of the drivers who was racing Kelly. A third driver believed to be involved in the illegal street race has not been identified at this time, according to a news release.
Duncan was already wanted for pre-arranged street racing prior to this investigation, according to CMPD. Police also say that officers tried to arrest Duncan on May 6th but they were not able to locate him.
Previously, police say Duncan received a letter from Chief of Police Johnny Jennings detailing the charges he could face if he continued to engage in dangerous and reckless activities.
Police say Duncan is known to operate a white Dodge Challenger with a Florida tag but has also been observed driving a silver Dodge Challenger, possibly with a paper tag.
Anyone with information on Duncan’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
