Kendall Jenner’s New Tequila Ad Under Fire
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kendall Jenner’s new tequila ad has a lot of people up in arms, claiming the supermodel is taking advantage of Mexican culture to push her new line. In the ad for 818 Tequila, Jenner is featured on an agave farm in Jalisco, Mexico, where her operation is running. She’s seen alongside native farmers in the field.
Some see the ad as cultural appropriation. One critic tweeting, “Kendall Jenner coming out with her ‘own’ tequila is ultimate modern day colonizer vibes.” And, “I’m sorry but if you buy 818 Tequila from Kendall Jenner you’re not as cool as you think you are”
Jenner has since disabled to comments on her accounts.
It should, however, be noted that celebrities like George Clooney, Rande Gerber, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, LeBron James and Kevin Hart have all launched tequila brands with similar branding and ads, but theirs did not come with as much criticism.
Our question of the night: does Kendall Jenner deserve the backlash?
