Omega Blocking Pattern Will Bring High Heat For Days

The developing heatwave is knocking on our door! Our average first 90° day is May 20th so this heat is right on schedule, but temperatures will still be well above-average.

Temperatures will push 90° in some neighborhoods on Friday and only rise through the weekend and into next week. Typically when we see our first heatwave of the season it comes and goes in a couple of days – not this one. This is a weather phenomenon called the Omega Blocking Pattern. The area of high pressure that is overhead is sandwiched between low pressures, one to our east and one to our west which is causing a block. This will allow temperatures to stay above-average for days to come.

This hot pattern is also going to be a dry one as well so be sure to water your gardens and lawn.

We will have an updated drought monitor on Thursday – I have a feeling more of the WCCB area will be put in Abnormally Dry or Moderate Drought conditions. This has been the driest spring since 2016.
