An Air Quality Alert – Code Orange has been issued for the Charlotte metro area from 10 am until 8 pm Monday. High pressure is not only bringing toasty 90-degree temps to the area, but it’s also affecting pollution levels.
The primary pollutant that impacts the region is ozone. Unlike other aerosols, ozone is not released directly into the atmosphere. It forms after pollutants interact with certain weather conditions. High pressure brings on sunny skies, light wind, and in the summer months warmer temperatures. The majority of Air Quality Alert days in the region are issued during the summer months. Primary pollutants from sources like car emissions interact with sunlight producing ozone. High temperatures and stagnant air keep ozone trapped closer to the surface, making it difficult for sensitive groups to breathe.
Those who suffer from heart and lung disease, older adults, and children should limit their time outdoors during ‘Code Orange’ days. Also, those who use high exertion for workouts, or doing outside work should also limit their time outdoors. Keeping windows closed and investing in an air purifier helps those in sensitive groups during air quality alert days.
