CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials with the nonprofit Feeding Charlotte say a new app will make it easier for companies with excess food at the end of the day to donate it to those in need.
Officials say the app ChowMatch is a new Food Rescue software that will match excess food with those who are food insecure, by creating a three-way match between food donors, food receiving agencies, and volunteer food rescuers, who help pick up and deliver this surplus food, in Mecklenburg County.
Founder and Developer of ChowMatch, Tod Hing, says while working with Feeding Charlotte he could tell they were passionate about food waste.
Hing says “When meeting Kim Aprill and Mendy Godman, it was immediately apparent they are both passionate about reducing food waste and feeding the hungry. With their dedication to directing waste from our landfills, Kim and Mendy are making the world a better place for our children.β
Feeding Charlotte has rescued over 60,000 surplus meals since beginning operations in 2019, and officials say the ChowMatch software will allow the nonprofit to triple its impact over the next three years.
βChowMatch makes it so easy for companies with excess food to post a donation and a time frame for the food to be picked up. It takes them less than five minutes to make a huge impact for the environment and the health and wellness of the Charlotte community,β said Kim Aprill, Director of Operations for Feeding Charlotte.
Food donors currently using the new software include QC Catering, Dining Services at UNCC, and Atrium Health, according to a news release.
Officials say donors can create regular, weekly donations or they can post one-time donations to be picked up by Feeding Charlotte volunteers with the new app.
